The One With The "Which Friend Are You?" Quiz

Here's the quiz.

My results?

But of course.

In other news, this evening was spent hooked on iSketch. Remember that old quiz show 'Win, Lose Or Draw'? Well this is like the online version, where each contestant gets a word they have to illustrate for the others to guess. Of course, the quality of draftmanship takes a swift dip due to usage of a mouse instead of an actual marker, but given the right blend of contestants and a reliable internet connection, it's terribly addictive. How addictive? How about over six hours straight? Who needs Saturday night when you've got iSketch? Ha ha ha...

The Next Friday After Next

Friday again, and you know what that means: Go To Campus For No Good Reason Other Than To Hang Out Day. Actually, that wasn't my original plan, but since said plan got postponed, I figured I might as well go to campus.

Before the drive, I found myself digging through the racks looking for Dodgy's Free Peace Sweet to play in the car. I have no idea what brought that on, considering I haven't heard that album with any regularity since, like, the second year of high school, when I bought it. Now that I think about it, the uptempo harmony-laden pop rock reminds me of Sunflower, one of the Beach Boys' best albums which I listened to quite a bit when making my Beach Boys compilation. Plus there was the fact that I left the PC on before falling asleep last night, and when I woke up and deactivated the screensaver, the first thing onscreen was the review for that album at www.allmusic.com . Sounds a bit of a stretch, but that's the only explanation I can come up with.

Anyway, it was great listening to Free Peace Sweet again. High school was a long time ago, but that album sure has aged well. I think it's one of the first times I bought an album purely because of one song I heard on the radio ('Good Enough'), and ended up liking the whole album as well. 'In A Room', 'Trust In Time', 'If You're Thinking Of Me', 'Good Enough', 'Found You', 'One Of Those Rivers'...classics. It's been a real long time since I've felt something like that when buying new stuff. Or maybe it's just a case of too much music, too little time to really get into anything.

Got to campus, hung out with the guys my age (which are on the verge of extinction), checking out all the women passing by. Well, what else are several (presumably) hetero males to do? I eventually split from the group to check out the final votes of the student association elections, where I ended up being the most ancient person there. Ah well: this is my last semester on campus, so I might as well make the most of it while it lasts. Plus it's always good to bond with the younger generation, especially the girls. I had my trusty digicam with me, and I got to thinking about the movie City Of God. I haven't actually sat down and watched it, but I've seen enough to know that the guy with the camera gets all the breaks. That certainly seems the case in real life...

Got home, went online, and found this tidbit of news. I've been translating for Golf Digest for over a year now, and though I still haven't come close to taking up golf as a pastime, I sure wouldn't have clicked on that headline if I weren't doing golf-related work. So I guess you could say it's had an effect on my life. Guess I'll soon be working on my greens in regulation play. Whatever that is.

To write or not to write

Feeling muy crappy today. Just can't seem to get anything done, even though there's a lot on my plate: assignments, work, writing Friendster testimonials. Yes, I take that last one probably more seriously than I should. Regardless of what is said, I rather dislike shoddily-written testimonials for me, mainly because I do my best to write something meaningful for the folks in my list. Which is why I've fallen a bit behind in writing for those who've written for me, 'cause it's like my creative juices are low. The weird thing is that nowadays, I probably spend more time writing testimonials (and posting in this blog) than I do for stuff I actually get paid for. I'd have much more money in the bank if I devoted my creative energies towards paying assignments. Food for thought...

I'll pick you up at half past three...

After a brief hiatus from eating microwaved frozen lasagnas because the ones we bought turned to be all rotten, I finally struck it lucky. Or maybe it just so happened that the previous batch were all bad. Expect many more lasagnas very soon...

Also finally road tested the two-CD, 54-song Beach Boys compilation I just burned. The basic concept is a bunch of songs I like that are meant to provide a somewhat comprehensive overview of their career when it relatively mattered more. In other words, even though I've grown to appreciate it a bit more, I've drawn the line at 'Kokomo', and the tracks encompass proper studio albums from Surfin' Safari until The Beach Boys only. Apart from a major screw up with the tracklisting at the end of Disc One, the results sound (and look) great. Now I've gotta whittle down the list so I can burn nothing but the best (in my opinion) onto one disc, for future indoctrination upon anyone willing to submit.

Hasief Van Winkle

Early class today. Turns out this week we had a lecturer known for being somewhat of a killer. The fact that I watched the Oscars the night before right until the end (with several occasions of nodding off) sure didn't help matters in trying to stay awake for fear of getting a shoe (or something equally as lethal) thrown at me. In fact, I actually did drift off several times mid-lesson...but I managed to ask the lecturer a question relevant to the lesson (a rare occurence), so that probably distracted attention from my being comatose for a good part of the session.

After wandering around campus for a bit, I ended up getting about two hours more sleep on the floor of Pacivis, this NGO thing run by fellow International Relations students. According to eyewitness reports (or maybe that should be earwitness), I snore when I sleep facing upwards. A little tip for whoever's gonna be sharing my bed in the near future.

What price dignity?

On the way home last night, I saw that School Of Rock was on at the local cinema. A relief, since I thought I'd missed the boat on that one. Well it's not as if it's the type of movie that usually stays on screens for up to a month. Anyway, I'd been meaning to see it ever since I heard about it, but apparently it came and went in about a week, at both major and crappy theatres. The fact that it finally surfaced here probably means that my local cinema is on a whole different level of crappiness altogether. Regardless, I finally got around to seeing it on the big screen. I don't give a rat's ass that I ended up going alone, because when I set my mind on something, then I do what needs to be done to see it through. "Going to the movies alone? How undignified!" Well if that's the case, then my dignity costs Rp 20,000 (Rp. 12,500 on Mondays).

Pot bellies and panties

Bizarre sight of the morning: Dad walking around without a shirt, after some extensive work on his plants in the front yard. Apart from the pot belly, he's looking pretty good for a guy pushing 62. Better get gardening then...

Most of the afternoon was spent copying songs from my Beach Boys CDs, to be then burned onto those "vinyl" blank CDs I bought. I could just burn them straight from the source CDs, but I'm just trying to make sure the blanks to go to waste in case something happens when ripping the tracks.

Went out in the evening to pick up something at Avie's house in Kebayoran Baru (thanks for the postcard, Nad!), and as it turned out, it was time for the Leeds-Liverpool match. Ended up going to the Sportsman, this bar in Blok M where expats go to watch games. This was my second time, so I guess I went there 'cause I liked the atmosphere the first time around - especially because I get to swear a lot. And there was plenty of F-word usage during this match, which unfortunately only ended up in a draw, thus leaving me still waiting for the first victory I'll witness at one of those bars. But it was a great match, one of what those commentators usually refer to as "a great advertisement for the English game".

So yes, it was exciting. Excitement means lots of shouting (and swearing). Lots of shouting (and swearing) means one's voice gets worn out. One's voice gets worn out quickly when one is suffering from the flu. And so, my voice is pretty shot at the moment. But ah well, it's not as if I'm Barry White or Brian McKnight, where bras and panties go airborne with every syllable I utter. "Cough." "Whooosh! Flop!"*

*sound of something out of the Victoria's Secret catalogue landing on my head
