The Umpteenth Journal Attempt

That's not a man, that's a woman, baby!

Weird dinner conversation: it turns out that Dad and Mum 2 read my review on the Akademi Fantasi Indosiar album, featuring the stars of the hugely popular reality TV talent show. That lead to Dad asking as to why the judges on Indonesian Idol act like a bunch of pricks (or words to that effect). Ended up switching to American Idol - which just happened to be playing right then - to show them the template for all the bitchiness. Of course, the show was already in the final stages, whereas the Indonesian version is just past the audition phase - you know, where all the tremendously crap people are, the ones that make William Hung sound like Josh Groban. Dad was wondering how the judges could be so cruel. Well if I were in their shoes, I probably couldn't resist falling out of my chair either.

Anyway, getting back to Corey Pavin: great golfer who suddenly found things going downhill. And not just in his performance, but also in his personal life. He was the kind of guy who thought that if he was to be the best at golf, it had to come at the expense of everything outside of it. Turns out that wasn't the case, and so his golf went into freefall, as did his marriage. Eventually he realised that his suffering was in part cause by his tendency to close off everyone around him, and so he's spent the past few years rebuilding his bridges and slowly getting back into the game.

Why did that strike a chord with me? Guess it's the whole insularity thing. I, too, lead a rather isolated life, in which 95% of the communication I have with anyone is of things that don't relate to anything important in my personal life. Not that many people ask, but when they do, all they get is just a vague idea of what's going on. I dunno, I guess I'm just not someone who's easily given to spilling the beans. Maybe that's part of why this blog exists: I'm not gonna tell you directly, but if you gotta know, here's the blog, go see what you can find. Which, I'll admit, also doesn't shed too much light on me as a person, save whatever pop culture-related thing I'm obsessing over at the moment.

And it's not like I don't want to talk about my personal life and feelings, and it's not like I keep everything a total secret. So what's the problem? Maybe I'm deliberately applying a need-to-know policy. Do you really need to know? And even then, do I really want to tell you? At the moment, I'm stumped as to why this has to be the case. But I fear that Pavin's tale may be sort of a warning sign, so I dunno...maybe it's time I took a more pro-active approach to relationships.

Cosmic pop culture reference coincidences (!) of the day:
1. Went on www.mtv.com, just part of my daily music news absorption. Found an interview with the Beastie Boys, my favourite rap group of all-time (OK, my only favourite rap group), who'll release their first album in six years next month. Also checked out their new single and video for the first time, instant hit material. Anyway, switched to Channel V, and lo and behold: they were showing a documentary on the Beastie Boys. All this has made me want to buy their (rather pricey) DVD...

2. Was chatting with Andra about Jesse, one of the finalists in MTV Indonesia's VJ Hunt 2004. Specifically the fact that Jesse is a girl who very much looks like a guy, which is what I thought she was in the first picture I saw of her. One of those androgynous gothic-look wusses. Now that I know Jesse is a she...I suddenly feel like she'd be able to beat me up with the greatest of ease. Anyway, a few seconds after discussing her, I changed the channel to MTV Indonesia, and there she was on the screen, namely in the promo spot meant to give us some insight about her. Which only serves to reinforce the perception that she'd take me in a bare-knuckle brawl.

Isolationalist policy

Spent these two days finishing up work and getting about four hours of sleep in total. Thus, no post yesterday. Though I did have something to write about when I was translating this article about Corey Pavin, a golfer who was on top of his game in 1995, then lost it, and is currently trying to make a comeback. After over a year's worth of working for Golf Digest, I've found out that this isn't exactly an uncommon tale. But there were things about this guy in particular that I could relate to, specifically in terms of being some guy who tends to shut himself off from everyone around him. I'd elaborate, but at the moment I'm about to drop dead. I'm just posting this so as not to leave a blog gap that would potentially make me reluctant to get back to writing. So maybe next time...

Knowing is half the battle

Was going to write yesterday, but I was too tired from football. Not that much happened anyway: it was supposed to be the first match of our team's title defence in the high school alumni's cup, but our opponents failed to show up on time and in significant numbers, so we just ended up playing kickabout so as not to let the day go to waste. Upon getting home, I was going to get work done, but I was too tired to do that too.

And now it's the middle of the day. I've been awake for several hours now, but I've still barely got any work done. Ended up finding this instead, which is infinitely funnier if you're a G.I. Joe fan. Make sure you download the one with the fire, that one had me in bloody tears of laughter.

Back to work now...
